American Singer, Actress and Comedian known for roles in films Thoroughly Modern Millie and Skidoo. In 1992 Worcester gazzette said:
"Rita's 5-foot-2 and I'm 5-foot-8 in stocking feet", although in 1954 Lima News she said:
"I'm a big girl, five feet, eight-and-a-half inches in my stocking feet and six feet tall in heels"
When I noticed that my son, Chan, was beginning to tower over me I decided I had to do something about it, other than get higher heels. I was told if I had an iron bar installed in our bathroom and I hung on it for a half hour every morning, it would increase my height. I've been doing this now for maybe five months and my height actually has increased from 5 foot 8 ¼ to 5 foot 9.

I have just found out that Carol passed on in January of this year, aged 97.
5ft8.5 was very tall for a woman of her generation. She'd still be tall now.
RIP Carol xxx 💐

She was in a movie with Clint Eastwood. If Clint really was 6 ft 4 then Carol would be about 5'8.5 and 5 ft 11 in heels. The first traveling Saleslady 1956 Clint is pared up with Carol Changing. Carol came just under his eye level and because she had a dress on she was most likely wearing heels. She's 96 today she would of shrunk a lot. If she was really 5 ft 8 in the 1950's today being 96 years of age i would put her at 5 ft 4 maybe 5 ft 3.In heels today she would stand 5 ft 5. It's so weird i always assumed she was 5 ft 3 in her prime but seeing her with Clint i was shocked at how close in height they were. I was starting to wonder if Clint was really 6 ft 4 thinking maybe he was around 5 ft 11.Come to think of it that movie i mentioned Clint really didn't look that tall in comparison to the other male actors but when he stood beside Carol Canning i swear some some scenes shows a 3 inch difference. Today i would put her at 5 ft 3 maybe even 5 ft 2. Prime 5 ft 8.

Interesting picture of a 66 year old Carol Channing trying her darndest to look taller than a 76 year old Lucille Ball.
She is both tip-toeing, and raising her head, while Ball, wearing a minimal heel, is actually leaning on her right foot, and has her left leg slightly bent.
Even with all that, Channing looks no more than 2" taller, which if you subtract the tip-toeing, would put Ball and Channing at almost the same height, even at Ball's advanced age.

Carol is one of only a few actors who has claimed to have done a grow taller program, I don't know about the claim of growing though...could be she measured earlier and earlier and eventually was doing it soon out of bed near 5ft 9!

I was at a benefit performance and was a few feet away from her. It is hard to believe she is as tall as is reported on this web site. I vote for 5 feet 3 inches.

One of the quotes Rob has given me is about height increase.
In 1969, Carol Channing said on somebody asking about Channing's stature in a Newspaper:
"Oh gracious darling. OK, they can notice it on television! How wonderful! When I noticed that my son, Chan, only fifteen, was beginning to tower me (he's now a six-footer) I decided I had to do something about it. Other than get higher heels I was told that if I had an iron bar installed in our bathroom and I hung on it for a half hour every morning, it would increase my height. I've been doing this now for maybe five months and my height actually has increased from 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 9. The trick is not to chin the bar, just dangle from it."
A bit contradictory to her 1954 quote above. Maybe she got 1/2 an inch, that's probably more likely.
