How tall is Bruce Dickinson

Bruce Dickinson's Height

British Singer from from Iron Maiden. He said in Rolling Stone "I've spent my whole life forgetting that I'm five foot six, posing for photos like, "Make sure you get the half in" [laughs]. I always though he was an average height 5'8-5'11 guy. I'm surprised he is only 5'6

He has always looked short.

Yes he always seemed around 5'6, he still puts on an amazing show with the band and as he's running around the stage he's got that 5'6ish frame I always thought. Maybe 5'7 in the 80s and 90s

@ Rising174cm - I HAVE met him! In fact, I used to drink in the same pub in Bethnal Green, called the Green Gate. When their career took off big time, they vamoosed! The clientele in that pub tended to be on the very tall side, but Bruce looked distinctly below average, and I always wore trainers as it was a long, 4-train journey in order to get there. He wasn't that much taller than me, considering I was below the shoulders of most guys!

Weak 5ft6, probably less now.
Rising174cm said on 30/Jan/21
@Leesheff85: That's another fatuous comment. You don't have to be exactly one height to know what it looks like. Follow your logic and Rob could only estimate people who are 5'8". I know for a fact Bruce was more than 2.5" shorter than me. I'm literally 100% sure. Moreover, I've posted numerous photos showing him looking barely 5'5". I greatly admire the man for his talent and ambition, but he's simply not as tall as 5'6".

Now tell me, have you actually met Bruce?
Leesheff85 said on 27/Jan/21
No you don't rising not really you havent lived it everyday like someone like me who has lived with being this height for the last 19 years not that I dislike it now or anything must be great being perfectly average height though

@Leesheff85: What a ridiculous remark. Of course I know what 5'6" looks like. You think I have no idea whether someone is only about 2.5" shorter than me? Not only was my own mother 5'5" in her younger years, but my sister is 5'6.5" and two of my best friends are honest 5'6" men. Have you even met Bruce? I have when he was still in his 40s and I can tell you he's 5'5" on a good day.

5'6" looks something like Steve Harris with 5'5.5" listed Lars Ulrich: Click Here

Bruce and Harris: Click Here Click Here Click Here Click Here Notice I've included photos where Bruce is closer to the camera and standing straighter yet he doesn't look over 5'5" in any of them. Btw, even Nicko is more average height than tall. Iron Maiden isn't exactly what anyone would call a tall band.

Sorry rising you and Brad are 100% wrong the guy is 5ft 6 neither you or Brad would truly know what 5ft 6 looks like and I certainly do the guy would be equal height to me if both of us are barefoot
Rising174cm said on 25/Dec/20
@Littlelee5ft6: That's nowhere near a 1.5" difference between Bruce and Jamie. There's barely any difference at all there. Brad is 100% right on this one. Bruce makes Nicko look like a giant. Remember, Bruce was at best, the same height as Blaze Bayley. Possibly, a hair shorter. If Bruce is 5'6" then I'm 5'10"!

When I turned on my TV upon waking up just now, I was met with a huge iron maiden, a medieval torture device designed to kill the condemned by enclosing him in a gruesome, man-size stature, reminding me of an unfriendly Eyptian mummy. The device would kill it's victims with the spikes contained therein.

Careless 'Midsomer Murders' character, detective Barnaby, inadvertently shut his helper in the iron maiden, leaving him to call out for help. Just as well this was a rare model that needed the pressing of a button or whatever, to set it in motion, so the cop came out unscathed! 🗿😲

I'll give Bruce 5ft6.5. 😁🎶

They make him look taller for some band photos by putting him in front and he even alluded to this himself in the quote above. If you expect him to be at least 5'6" then I think you'll be surprised at how short he is in person like I was. He was in his mid 40's when I met him so he hadn't lost height. I'm not saying he's 5'4" either, but definitely under 5'6". Bruce might be a solid 5'5" like Blaze or maybe, just maybe he's 5'5.5" and measured in shoes, but that's best case. I don't expect you to take my word for it so here's some pictures.

I've posted this one, but it's a full shot with Bruce standing completely straight and closer to the camera than Steve Harris, who is still clearly taller: Click Here You can see Bruce is not on lower ground if you look at their feet
Here's Steve Harris with 5'5.5" listed Lars Ulrich: Click Here

An inch taller than Blaze? I don't think so: Click Here Solid 5'6" in your book, but 5'5" in reality. If he were a solid 5'6", he'd be the same height as Steve Harris and that's clearly not the case. I was quite surprised at how short he was in person and this was 12-13 years ago so he hadn't shrunk. Granted, it turned out I was taller than I thought at the time, but I have honest 5'6" friends who I'm certain are taller than Bruce. This is coming from a huge fan of not just the Maiden stuff, but Bruce solo and Samson when he was "Bruce Bruce".

Rising - 174 cm said on 7/Jul/18
Interesting to see a claim from Bruce and all things considered it's a reasonable one as he would be about that in shoes. I could have sworn I saw/read him claiming 5'6" or 5'6.5" years ago.

@Sonnecker: He's only 168 cm in shoes. He looked more 5'4" than 5'6" to me actually, but I'll say that was probably because it was a quick encounter after a concert and Bruce was in a hurry and I could agree with a solid 5'5", but I wasn't entirely wrong because Bruce is not taller than Blaze. I was surprised at how small he is in person and I'd be absolutely shocked if he measured closer to 5'6" than 5'5". 5'6" really doesn't look that short from my perspective.

Just look at Bruce with Steve Harris and remember Harris is only 5'6" range himself or 169 cm at the absolute most: Click Here Click Here Click Here
Sonnecker said on 5/Apr/18

Powerhouse said on 27/Nov/17
5’6 is an impossibility, he is 5’5 tops. something in the 5’4 range is most probable.
Rising - 174 cm said on 9/Aug/17
Nicko is actually average height, which naturally puts the rest of the band except for Janick, especially Bruce and to a lesser extent Harris, below average. Nicko is somewhere in the 5'9"-5'10" range. I'll post some evidence of this.

Dave Mustaine is 1"-1.5" taller than Nicko here: Click Here Keep in mind, Mustaine has almost surely shrunk with his back problems and looks 5'10" range these days to me, but he's also hunched. I wouldn't guess Dave above 179 cm nowadays. I don't know if Nicko is wearing sandals there or not, but that would still make him about 5'10" at the most.
Not much difference between Nicko and Geddy Lee: Click Here Rob lists Geddy Lee at 5'10", but Geddy may have lost some height in his mid 60s. That listing does also go back to the Glenn days so I don't know. I do know Geddy doesn't look much taller than Eddie Vedder here: Click Here Vedder is listed at 5'6.75" on this site.
Nicko with Ozzy who may have been 5'9.5" peak, but is no more than 5'8" these days: Click Here
And Nicko with 5'8" Dave Ellefson: Click Here

Nicko and Janick are the two ones I'd say are around the average height for a man in the UK. All the rest are below the average. In fact, Dave Murray looks like he may have shrunk a bit. In fairness, Nicko is the oldest so he may have been taller when he was young, but he was always clearly under 6 feet. He just looked tall because the band is frankly short and I mean no offense by that since I love the band. When you consider Nicko is only average height, consider how much taller he is than Bruce and you'll see Bruce is about 5'5" or maybe 166 cm at the most, just as I saw in person. I think he's more like 165 or so. I don't know if he's shrunk much since he's a fit, active guy.
abcd said on 20/Jun/17

He looks no taller than 5'5" in that pic, and like I said, that's what he seemed to me. For reference, Steve Harris is only about 5'6" himself and Dave Murray and Adrian Smith around 5'7" or so and all are taller than Bruce, noticeably taller there. Huge voice and personality, small stature.

Correct about the not too friendly part, but I still admire the man. He hadn't shrunk at all when I met him and the 5'5" max I saw is only more confirmed to me seeing him appear a bit shorter than Blaze on stage in 1990 as well compared to the same band members. Bruce didn't wear the same heels or lifts Ronnie James Dio did, but still Ronnie was never more than 5'3" max, possibly more 5'2": Click Here If you want to see how 5'6" guys looked with Ronnie, look at Geezer Butler or Vivian Campbell. One Saturday evening in the early 80's, I was drinking in a raucous pub called the 'Green Gate' in Bethnal Green, in the East End of London. (To get there, I needed 3 trains, but would turn the journey into some kind of enjoyable adventure with which ever friends I could drag down there with me!).
Anyway, I was standing at the bar and somebody I knew said, "Bruce Dickenson is behind you!"
I barely knew who Iron Maiden were, let alone own any of their records. I looked round and saw this guy, not much taller than me, with long blond hair, but I was anything but starstruck! He was below average in the friendliness department as well as the height one. 5ft6 seems about right - I was inches away!
Later, I found out that my friend Belinda (Bee), a nurse who was very popular, pretty and flirty, had gone out with him. She's the one who called it a day! The guy she was with when I knew her, who had very long brown hair, was way over 6ft, and so was her ex, who had equally long red hair, who I went out with! That is how we met!
I have seen Bruce interviewed since, and he seems a lot more friendly now! He gets 5ft5.5 from me, as he has probably shrunk a little. To be quite honest, he didn't seem any taller when I saw him!
RisingForce said on 8/Apr/17
They put Bruce in front in a lot of the band photos, perhaps to make him taller or maybe simply because he's the "frontman", but in a lot of the early '81-'82 photos you can see he's shorter. Unfortunately, this is the only decent photo of Bruce and Blaze I could find from 1990, several years before Bruce left and Blaze replaced him: Click Here

I actually thought Bruce could have even been a bit below 5'5", but he was trying to get away from the fans waiting so it's possible he wasn't standing straight, but he definitely didn't seem taller than 5'5". I try to avoid bringing up Glenn, but FWIW, Harris was about an inch shorter than Glenn in their pic, but Glenn had boots and Harris sneakers. Incidentally, Glenn agreed with me that Bruce was 5'5".

Rob I think this guy more than most people illustrates how a guy even this short can give off a "big" impression by sheer personality and presence. In my mind I thought he was probably around 6 ft!
Arch Stanton said on 16/Jul/15
Rob can you add a photo? He's got those crazy eyes hasn't he, reminds me of Steve Irwin! Surprisingly short yup, like Eddie Vedder his strong, larger than life stage persona gives a big impression and you don't really notice them being that short on stage. I used to pass Maiden off as a "Teenage Dirtbag" type band but I saw an Iron Maiden concert on youtube a few weeks back and they rocked big time, some impressive guitar work too, better than a lot of the harder rock bands. I tend to listen to more jazz these days but Maiden, Whitesnake and Def Leppard are fantastic live, I've seen the latter two, but not Maiden.

Berek said on 29/Sep/14
Met him some years ago on a flight to Egypt. Oddly enough, he was the aeroplane's co-pilot! He stood in the aisle in the middle of the plane and mingled a while with the passengers. He was slightly shorter than my wife, who is 5' 6.75" and in thinner soled shoes (espadrilles) than he was wearing. 168cm is probably on the money, as the difference was around 1cm.
RisingForce said on 8/Jun/13
I met him as well, and he was surprisingly short. I'd say about 5'5". Can't buy 5'6" to be honest.

Not the best picture, but he looks quite short here, and it's one of the few band photos where Bruce isn't closest to the camera. Click Here

Regardless, he's an amazing singer whose voice had held up remarkably well. His vocals on The Talisman off the last album are some of his best. He's actually been a better live singer since the reunion than he had been since the Piece Of Mind tour, and he's utilized his low range much more while still hitting most of the high notes.

Yeah, jtm, I did think he could be that short, but I was probably wrong on that. Around 5'5" is probably correct. Hard to pinpoint an inch.

So you're a fan of both of them? Incredibly talented singers, though I personally preferred Dio and thought his voice held up even better over the years. Dio was also a nicer guy, not just my opinion on the latter either, many have agreed.

Interestingly, Bruce said he use to joke with Ronnie about looking up to him despite being 3 inches taller. I don't buy Bruce being 3 inches taller than Ronnie when Ronnie was in his prime.

By the way, if you have the enhanced cd version of Number Of The Beast, check out inside the booklet where Bruce is standing with the rest of the band. It made me think I may have been correct when I saw him at 5'4".

When I was an adolescent I was crazy to know his true height. When I grew up (in mind, not in height, for the simple reason: I was an adolescent with an adult height, because my family develops quickly in height. My brother is 6'2" since about 16 years old, I became almost 5' 10" at the same age and I had almost an young adult appearance at this age) and became open-minded, differently from that narrow-minded and imature adolescent, I became convicted than for me Dickinson's height doesn't matter. What matters is his SILVER VOICE.
RisingForceYJM said on 26/Apr/08
Glenn I also love Somewhere In Time. They managed to be creative with the synths instead of just using them to be more commercial. It really gave the harmonies a new sound too. i knew paul once.he lived in new york city for 6 months or a year.i had his # too.imagine,me taking a piss in bathroom club at the age of 18 and my favorite singer is standing near me.awkward.i was shocked cause i thought he was a recluse in london! he was 5-11 or 6ft.
madien said on 11/Feb/08
Glenn, have you ever met Paul Di'Anno? I just read his book, The Beast, he's a self-confessed lunatic! Great singer though!
glenn said on 10/Jan/08
somewhere i loved when i was a kid.alot hate that album.that was a weird time when everyone went glam or used keyboards or in maidens and priests case, guitars synths.at least maiden did it tasteful.priest did invent new great ideas on turbo, but overall it backfired cause of bad songwriting.i hated when maiden did the whole new album when i went.maybe ill dig out the album and give it a another spin.
Andrei said on 9/Jan/08
saw him in a gig in London just over a year ago, i'm 5'8 and i was definitely taller than him so 5.6 or just below is about right. Still however tall/short he is, easi;y one of the best singers ever.

and Glenn, as for A Matter Of Life And Death being one of their worst albums, I thought that when I first heard it and didn't like it for months, then suddenly the whole thing clicked and I now think it's one of their best. When I saw them play the whole album on their last tour it was just incredible. My favourite Maiden albums gotta be Somewhere In Time though, it's always been my favourite, just does things for me that the other albums don't.
glenn said on 18/Oct/07
sound a little high, but maybe.my friend got the photo with on the beast tour lucky him.seemed 6ft in the photo.
Daniel said on 17/Oct/07
Maiden's ex-drummer Clive Burr seems to be much taller than the rest. I figure 6'1'' to 6'3''. What do you think, Glenn?
natalya said on 27/Sep/07
wow, i always thought, Bruce is taller!
actually, doesn`t matter is he 5`6 or 6`0, he most beatiful man and person. his figure is still far beyond compare!!!
glenn said on 27/Sep/07

I'm a big fan of Iron Maider.I was working out at a local gym in North Hollywood when I couldn't believe I saw Bruce on a stairmaster so I aproached him, not crazy or anything, not believing it was him I asked him but he denied it was him, well, maybe it was sombody who looked like him, later a gym trainer confirmed to me he was in fact Bruce. I thought to myself what a jerk he was with one of his biggest fans. He looked to me about the same height as I am 5'7"

Based on this, Nicko looks about 5'11 max. not exactly a huge band in size, but christ almighty are they huge in a musical sense

nice photograph. I wish I saw them and had a picture of them like you
glenn said on 4/Apr/07
dianno could be 5-11.
D. Ray Morton said on 3/Apr/07
I would've said 5'11"-6". He was always quite a bit taller than everyone else, except for Rod, who had to have been around 6'2" or more. Height aside, I'll say this: Di'Anno was one hell of a cool cat back in the day. Ever seen that old black and white footage of Di'Anno and Co. tearing it up in 1980? The lad was practically Elvis.

Live +One is great, btw.
Anonymous said on 3/Apr/07
dude, Live+one EP released only in Japan and in 1984 in Greece with 5 extra tracks, so yeah i'd definetely go to Japan to get it. Its pretty much like the soundhouse tapes with a few differences. Sorry Editor Rob =D
glenn said on 3/Apr/07
paul dianno is 6ft.
glenn said on 3/Apr/07
i never said technically he was the best.i know all the bands you mentioned and have all their cds.there are many great singers out there.that isnt my point.halford and dio are technically better than dianno.my point is the sound of diannos voice was the coolest and to me represented metal best.alot have agreed.halford is for sure as close.steve harris is the king of bass and the metal live concert look.but there are other great bass players.no ignorance here pal.like i said,im a music expert and a metal expert.you cant know my knowledge.im not good with band member names, but im good with owning many, many metal genres. i own everything maiden has put out on vinyl.rare ones too.do you own live +one? i doubt you do.rob, since you love this subject so much,i noticed you had terraplane up on your myspace.i love them.are you still on myspace?

Editor Rob
I had to ditch myspace, I was only really using it to keep track of some celeb pages, but no need for it now. My music collection is 98% digital, I don't really follow bands, I'm really a jack of all trades listener, except rap
...i.e. at the moment I've just listened to these 6 songs: ramstein "feuer frei", m2m "don't say you love me", megadeath "Duke Nukem theme", Krull theme, Jostein Hasselgard 'Move on', Busted 'britney' and Russel F*king crowe's "Sails those same old oceans"!!!!!
glenn said on 2/Apr/07
d-ray- i think nicko was 6ft peak.i just approached him and he told me too f*** off.if i was older and stronger like now,id challenge him to a fight.has been a dick on numerous occasions to people.alot nicer now.
glenn said on 2/Apr/07
and no,judas priest isnt going strong.the last 3 cds sucked horribley and everyone i know agrees with me.they even sucked live with halford 2,3 years ago.they were better live with ripper.hopefully the new cd will be good.hopefully itll be a double.amazing.im getting lectured on metal from a kid.priest hasnt been good since 1991.
glenn said on 2/Apr/07
in fact i just realised that you got into them a year after the reunion.this whole thing is ridiculous.and you wanna lecture me? please.you dont hold a candle to me.if the shoe was on the other foot,i wouldve shut up and showed you respect.or admitted i shouldnt speak.
glenn said on 2/Apr/07
number of the beast is overated.a good, maybe great album yes,but killers and piece of mind blows it away in song writing and sound.everyone will say beast.thats a corny answer.thats like led zeppelin 4,dark side of the moon, paranoid, biggest sellers, not really their best.only cause radio latched on to certain songs and the general public is too stupid to know otherwise.and too slow to pick out the complex pieces in an album like killers or ummaguma by floyd and physical graffiti by zeppelin.i know my music.i own 10,000 albums and 10,000 cds of all kinds of music and have dealt with fans like you a plenty.you guys cant admit that longevity is knowlege with a group for the most part.24 years a maiden fan and the less im becoming one.they are becoming a joke.real
fans see this.new fans get insulted and want to fit in.no offence,a maiden fan you might be and a perhaps an intelligent one,but 7 years doesnt qualify you an expert.i almost saw them on the powerslave tour,1985.finally saw them 20 years ago today actually.and met nearly every member since 1990.bruce is great,no doubt.but paul dianno was the greatest heavy metal singer of all time to me and many old timers.he had a more sinister, dirty voice and sung a touching ballad or 2.underated.number of the beast came out right in time for their explosion, which was bound to happen.yes, dianno had to go for sucsess purposes.otherwise they mightve caved in by the 3rd or 4th album.shame.the album cover of beast is what sold them.their sleeves in general helped.believe me.before the music.this isnt the chris that was always here, are you?.
Chris said on 1/Apr/07
i've only been listening to them for 7 years and heard all their albums, and yes here goes the top 5. 5.brave new world 4. seventh son of a seventh son 3. somewhere in time 2. powerslave 1. number of the beast. hardcore fans are in no way different than newer fans just cause they've been listening to them since the 80's has no meaning to Maiden , proof is they are still around today making records and touring the world. Paul Dianno is in no way the king. Bruce is! No prayer for the dying is till a great record even though the sound changes from seventh son. it goes into a more hard rock direction keeping the melody and the metal. fear of the dark is great too. See i appreciate music for what it is and have respect for the band. i don't care if the music might change a little bit. its still maiden and thats what counts. Can't say the same about Metallica who were eaten alive by greed and it shows the crap that they've become. Judas Priest is still going pretty strong too.
D. Ray Morton said on 1/Apr/07
My top five Maiden albums would be the first five. "Seventh Son" is great, too. And "Maiden Japan." Beyond that...whatever.

Nicko seemed pretty tall when I met him - 6'+ - but then, I don't remember the footwear. So I could definitely buy 6' and maybe even 5'11".

"nicko cursed me out when i was 19."

"Mission From 'Arry"-style?
glenn said on 1/Apr/07
sorry chris.me and longtime maiden fans dont agree.ive been listening to them since 1983.their best and most real hardcore maiden fans will agree are killers, iron maiden, piece of mind, powerslave and seventh son.the worst are virtual x1,no prayer,a matter of life and death.surprise near masterpiece is x-factor.brad nicko cursed me out when i was 19.so you have to see these people repeatdly to know.he is calmer now.bruce can be the worst.and on rare occasion,he can blow you away with how nice he is.steve is always the same.never talks much, but signs away and poses forever.long live paul dianno.he is the king! up the irons!
Brad said on 1/Apr/07
I'm more shocked about this photo than any other on this site....I tower over Nikko or whatever his name is every year at NAMM in Anaheim and I'm looking at the rest. That's amazing! I remember the drummer had the strangest nose I've ever seen...sorta flat. Really nice guy.
Chris said on 31/Mar/07
glenn Brave New World is among Maiden's top 5 albums without a doubt.
glenn said on 8/Mar/07
the drummer is 5-11,6ft.
Brad said on 7/Mar/07
God lord that's a short bunch. I'd run into the drummer at NAMM and he was kinda short and he's taller than the rest. Oh man that's funny, I never realized Bruce was that short! Wow!!!! Good camera work on the videos & concert film Eddie! Bruce can't be more than 5' 5"!!
Nikhil said on 1/Mar/07

the pic is no good, glenn is standing straight in the back of the pic and bruce is leaning, a bit closer to the camera, and he ground loocks like its leaning, and glenn stands where its heigher then where bruce stands, and glenn what about youre foot-wear? they lock like huge lifts, at least a couple of inches, if you compare glenns footwear with the others glenns locks most suspicious, and there is not a 5 cm difference between glenn and bruce in the pic even tho glenn have everything on hes side, bruce locks atleast 170 cm tall, and glenn are those the kind of footwear you use when you take youre pics with celebs, if you are, that gives you an advantage that isent fare, and in that case its harder to reveal the true height of the celebs. (dont mean to be mean or anything)thanks!

New Maiden CD is horrible. They've lost their entire edge and Bruce has the most monotone voice nowadays. The songs are too long, too boring and not one classic on their. Major disappointment.

Chris said on 6/Sep/06
mmh.. i think so far since brave new world with the complete lineup my favorite is Dance Of Death cuz its more epic..and thats what i like about Maiden..they are not an epic metal band but classic metal but still sound very epic and atmospheric .... just got AMOLAD yesterday i have to give it a few listens..although i like it very much

Hey Glenn, this is a bit off-topic, but I just got a Samson demo with Bruce from '79. He was killin' back then! I've been looking for a halfway decent-sounding copy of his Maiden audition tape (the one with "Twilight Zone")...do you know about this one?

I remember reading an interview where Bruce said that he is "only" 5'7 and how people usually think he is taller... but maybe I am imagining this. It seems accurate though.
D. Ray Morton said on 5/Feb/06
Bruce has always appeared slightly elfin in stature, so 5'5" wouldn't surprise me. An unbelievable singer back around '81-'82, but lost his voice within a couple of tours. He was great with Samson.

The only one I've met of the lot is Nick McBrain. Nice enough - though uncharacteristically reserved - and tall. Around 6'1".

Murray, Smith, and 'Arry seem a bit shorter here than I thought. I was under the impression that Steve, in particular, was closer to 5'10". And, of course, Rod Smallwood always dwarfed all of them, even Nicko.

Great picture.
