maybe a bit over 10 inches, not 11 inches though.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 1/Mar/21
Looked like a candidate for some loss at the end...an inch probably.
Minimum 6ft8 peak, maybe even 6ft8½? In boots probably 6ft10+ so the 6ft11 description has some validity.
Most wrestlers at least back in his day reached their billed heights in gear
Chaos Control 6'2.5 said on 27/Feb/21
Rob just out of interest, what made you decide on 6’8 for Haystacks? There’s no claims from him, and no listings other than the admittedly too high 6’11, but I would’ve thought he could maybe be closer to 6’9 peak and 6’6.75 when he died
Editor Rob
from what I've seen up to a couple of years ago I felt there was enough to give him that and that he would be a wrestler who likely had lost height earlier than others.

Remember seeing Haystacks back in the late 80's and distinctly recall them introducing him as 6'6" strange as he was always listed at 6'11" on TV.
Now,theres no way they would list a giant at below his true height (usually heavily inflated figures) so could this have been his real stature?

Xpac99 said on 3/Aug/19
Yes just because Haystacks could have been a candidate for losing more height earlier (30's) i think 6 ft 8 is ok! At 50 years old when he was in wcw, with big show looks 6ft7 - 6ft 7 1/2 and even with big daddy looks near 6 ft 8 in old age... undertaker and kane at 50 years old both peak height 6ft 7 1/2 they look in 6ft 6-6ft 7 range and tyler mane peak height 6ft 8 and about 6ft 7 at 50 years old, probably looks shorter of what haystacks could do at the same age. Therefore i believe an upgrade is due to him
Xpac99 said on 31/Jul/19
Yes of course, i don’t say he was over 6 ft 8 because i’m not sure, but at peak height 6ft 8 like big cass and tyler mane i think is more correct.. at 50 years old looks near 6ft 8 maybe didn’t lost some height, but a fraction always is possible.
I'll make you the proposal to put him at 6ft 8 ( intended as maximum height) if you think so, of course
Editor Rob
6ft 8 isn't ruled out, he may well have been that in 20's...
Haystacks could have been a candidate for losing more height earlier (30's), given his huge weight.
Xpac99 said on 28/Jul/19
Big Rob 6 ft 7 1/2 is a peak height or halfway between his entire career? I sai this because Looks 6ft 7 1/2 in the 90’s when he was old, but in the 70/80’s looks 6 ft 8 range

Richard Thomas said on 28/Nov/18
Editor Rob, there is a photo on Google (can't get the link to work, might be able to email you the link for you to post on here) where Haystacks is stood next to an open door way and the top of the door would be about level with the tip of his nose, the top of the doorframe in the photo is about level with his eye, so if the door is a standard sized door (around 6'6/6'7) then that would put Giant Haystacks height at about 6'11. Maybe Haystacks was been truthful with his height but because so many other wrestlers have their height adjusted that his stated height is automatically taken as been adjusted when it might not have been
Editor Rob
Is
This the image I presume. I'm not sure just how high the door would be (if it's in the UK it will likely be 6ft 5 or 6. The angle is tricky with it.

He looks about 6" taller than Big Daddy in the picture on this site. I'll say he was between 6'7" and 6'8" in his prime and between 6'6" and 6'7" towards the end. So about 6'7.5" peak and about 6'6.5" by his short run in WCW. No doubt he was a big man.

Kurgle said on 20/Aug/17
The Giant Haystacks was probably around 6'8 or even a bit more, when he was as skinny as man could be (it's hard to believe but he once was a really skinny and a really tall man). Then he started to wrestle and his "weight shot up through the roof" and he seemed to lose some of that height. But that's also due to the fact that he can never be seen wearing any kinds of lifts in his wrestling boots, unlike so many of his opponents. Sometimes his boots looked so flat that you'd think he was walking bare feet the whole time. Compare to that to the Big Daddy V boots (there are images of them while he wears them in a match), which were around 3 INCHES (it looked like he was wearing high heels) and you know why those wrestlers can look shorter or taller in the ring compared to each other at different times.
What comes to his weight, the Guinness book of records had him at his heaviest at 50 stone = 700 pounds and in some of the matches he looked that! If that kind of weight is hard to believe, you can google a Youtuber by the name of Boogie2988 who was at his heaviest 580+ pounds at around 5'8 tall and he was nowhere near the size of the 6'8 giant! A 6'4 guy who was legitimately 700 pounds (on the biggest loser TV show) didn't even look on the screen as massive as the Giant Haystacks at his heaviest. So the real weight of the Giant Haystacks might've been just an estimate, since they didn't have proper scales to keep up with his weight at the time ( and he was traveling all the time). Thus in the matches you could hear them announce some generic weight like 532 pounds (in the states) or the same stone weight (no matter how he looked) and it would be obvious to anyone who has seen what a 532 pound man a feet shorter looks like, that this Giant was easily 100-200 pounds heavier! A real giant for sure!

Maybe he was wearing 2 inch soles like Kane but what if he was not then he will be still 6,8 maybe it's the camera angles and plus he weighs 600+ lbs that's a lot of weight on your joints so he is probaly hunched over so my final answer is 6,8 maybe 6,7.75

You can pretend that he was, but I promise you he was not. Big Show still has some fat, a bigger bone structure, more height, and more muscle than Haystacks ever did. If Haystacks had some muscle in that video, he would have been about 400 lbs, but he didn't. His arms were small and flabby, and his legs and chest were not big at that time. A healthy Haystacks should have been about 275 lbs if he was lean and no more than 325 lbs if he bulked up in a healthy way. I can easily look at him and tell. I have been around huge guys and tall guys my whole life and if you think Haystacks was heavier in that video from 1976 than Big Show is now, you are the one who is clueless. At best, he was 375lbs and around 70 lbs of that was fat. As far as his height, he probably was 6'7.5" at his tallest and 6'6" by WCW. He probably did get up to 600 lbs at his heaviest, but again most of it was pure fat.

No he was not, he was billed at 6'5.5 and 6'6'' .and in Canada when he taged with Hulk Hogan they were both billed at 6'6'', but he was 6'4.5''. and it's no good posting things from 1996 and saying he never lost any height from 1977 or 1979,when you been humping 435-640lbs about for 20 years, and he's posture is very bad,you look in that fight when he stands upright a few times he's a forhead taller, how long is your forhead 1" lol mine is 4",and I am 5'10".I have seen him twice in 1987 and 1992. and I was right next to the door he come though in 1987 and he had to turn sideways to get though it and he was about 3'' taller than the 6'6'' door to the top of he's hair, and this was at 8,30 in the evening.

I met Martin Ruane aka Giant Haystacks and I'm 6.4 and only just came up to his shoulders, he really was 6.11, in later years he started to stoop and lost about 2 inches as a result, I've got a picture of him face to face with Andre the giant from the late 70s early 80s and they're about the same height
Paul said on 28/Mar/16
There is considerable footage of him and other tall wrestlers e.g. Pat Roach, John Quinn and Anaconda (Alan Taylor) at 6'4.5, 6'4.75 and 6'5 respectively. Haystacks clears them all by 4' give or take.
6'7.5 or 8 was right for WCW days but 6'8.5+ in the 80's, maybe 6'9 in the 70's.

I saw Big Daddy wrestling in 1990, admittedly towards the end of his career, at which point I do not believe he could have been as tall as 6 feet.
I saw Haystacks wrestling in 1989, just after wrestling had disappeared from the telly in the UK.
Again, I do not believe he could have been as tall as 6'7.5 at that point - nearer to 6'5 - 6'6 MAX I'd say.

we are not counting the double chin, and Andre had a low forhead, about 3.75''.
No fat counted Click Here
Andre only had a low forehead compared to the rest of his face, not compared to a normal headsize.
In this pic Andre has his head down - eyeline way under the top of the ears so the top of his head is higher than in normal position.
Fact is doctors would measure his head length rather in this position than with a raised eyeline...
You don't need that to work out Andre's face,we know the size of he's hand, from the Japansse Mag,just under 10'' and we have see he's hands right next to he's face, which was at most 2'' longer, you seem to not understand on something that only avarage 9-9.5'' 1'' extra is masive, and Acromegalics face only grow in the jaw and head circumference, once the long bones have fused, the 6'' point on Ander's face is about 1cm over the tip of he's nose,
If Andre is looking short in photos next to other's it,s more likely Bad posture, and looking down, than him having a 13''face,it's the same there in that Haystacks,Sid comparason,Sid's bolt upright, and Haystacks has got he's head down taking in the mic 99% of that intervue.

peak Sid edging old Haystacks about 0.5"-max 0.75" here. Sid´s first billed height was 6´7" but I agree with Robs 6´6.5" ashe looked max 3.5" taller than 6´3" Lex Luger in the middle of the ring.
Imo Sids advantage over Haystacks is near all from his footwearadvantage so old Haystacks was 6´6.25"-6´6.5" in WCW.
Sid in the comparison had 1.75"-2" on 1992 Hogan that night, so Hogan was 6´4.5"-6´4.75" -his boots gave comparable height to Sid and it´s clear to see Hogan goes a bit on his tiptoes during the Wrestlemania 8 staredown.

You can claim he's over 6'2" all you like, the fact is he was listed at 6'1".
In Germany he was billed 187-188cm and in Japan I believe he was listed even below that height. So according to you all those wrestling organizations billed him below his actual height. He looks no taller than 6'1" next to 5'4" Jim Breaks. If he's close to 6'3", than Breaks is actually 5'6" (or again, also billed below his actual height).
It amazes me that on the Andre the Giant board you claim every wrestler in the WWF was inches below his billed height and in Andre's case 100 lbs below his billed weight, yet when it comes to British wrestlers you actually claim they were billed below their actual height & weight.

6" maybe 6.3" is possible in the face to face pic, but clearly the back to back is way better to measure and it shows 5.75" ok lets say 6" but no exaggaration to 7" fanboydreams of a 6´8"-9" Haystacks.
Rob nailed it pretty good for his peak with 6´7.5", I could see him edging peak Undertaker...
Thanks Kunoichi, great Info imo as legit as it gets!
JT´s comparison is one of my favorits, so Akebono at solid 6´8"/ 203-204cm clearly shows Big Show at weak 6´11.5" /211-212cm - 8cm gap there
Haystacks looks 6cm-6.5cm smaller, but with footwear disadvantage, imo he also looks to edge Tenta so 6´6.5"/199cm is a pretty fair guess for WCW Haystacks

just do the math
I have done the maths, and Daddy has got he's head raied to,you run a line across and you will see it's comes to Haystacks top lip, which would be 7''+ and I have taken .5'' off,if 1'' below Haystacks nose from the top of he's head is only 5.75'' you can forget Andre having 5'' over Hogan because he's up the top of he'e nose, and Mane on that comparason he's eyeline's much higher than anyone,so that must be useless to use,

Drew McDonald generally varied in weight from around 20st to 26st and heavier than he looked and 6'1 tall. He was very solid and surprisingly as heavy as Daddy in the 1987 match with Red Ivan and Danny Collins. Daddy was indeed a totally different build and between 24.5-28st in the early 80's and not the 23st usually suggested on old promotional material. In one tag match wearing a yellow leotard against Mal Kirk and co he looked close to bursting point, such was the girth. I watched some matches again on YouTube and could tell he was typically around 24st in 1987 rising to typically around 25st in 1988 give or take.

the thing is we know from he's army records he was 6'2.5'' in the 1950s and anyone he's next to in the 1980s that are in the 187-190cm he's about the same height, give or take 0'5'' and in the back to back shot of him with Haystacks from 1977 he's 6-7'' shorter, even if Daddy was down to 6'1.5'' in 1977 Haystacks was 6'7.5''+ in that photo,

i have seen that video but there really isn't any frame to compare height there given the camera is so high above the ring and its very hard to find a spot where guys are exactly aligned so no-one is getting an advantage. 2min 17-18 seconds looks to be about the best comparison between finlay and haystacks..daddy and finlay maybe 2min 55 seconds but its not perfect
drew mcdonald looks like he would be around my height (~6ft in shoes) comparing him to finlay, again its very difficult to determine rightly or wrongly if that is the case.
off topic but finlays selling for daddy in that match was just fantastic, even curt hennig in his prime would have applauded that.

I am going by what I know Drew said he's weight was,he used to do a bit of powerlifting, and was 141kg for those, that's about 312lbs,and he lost a lot of weight in about 2006,and people were thinking he was ill,but he said "I am not ill I have gone from 22st3lbs to 241lbs for heath and fittess Reasons" but Daddy was allways under billed in weight,he was well over 27st in later years,he was over 19st in 1954 in he's first stint as a wrestler, befor he had problems with Bert Asarati,
Paul said on 13/Dec/14
Kent Walton announced Drew McDonald as 25st in that match and if he doesn't weight quite that much he isn't far off. Daddy you can derive as 27st as Kent said the teams were 56st vs. 52st.

Paul said on 11/Dec/14
He was originally about 205-6cm and 202cm was final height or there about. He looked about 204-5cm in the 1980's. It was a colossal weight to carry round year in year out that in turn generally went up from the low 30's stones in the 1970's up to 40 or so by the early 80's and generally varied between 42-46 stone, even on occasions perhaps 48-49 stone thereafter and apparently according to Guinness World Records, once claimed to be 50 stone.
Vegas said on 11/Dec/14
always thought rude was around 6'3 but really its neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things
roel have you seen any decent shots of haystacks/daddy and fit finlay together. i met finlay couple of years back so he would be a good measuring stick
Chaz said on 10/Dec/14
Click Here Tony St Clair was taller than Steve Reagal, and Ian Muir was over 5'10'' Haystacks here looks taller than 6'7.5'' He lost helght after 1990 but he's not anything under 202cm here in the late 1970s

So what are you saying then Haystacks was only 6'3''? and Big daddy was only 5'8''? that would make Pat Roach 6' and John Quinn 6', like I have said I have seen Haystacks turn sideways and duck he's head to get in a 6'6''x 2'6'' door and that was 1987,at Lewisham Theatre,
Where exactly in my post am I claiming 6'3" for Haystacks. I didn't state any height for Haystacks.
But I don't think he's 6'7.5", let alone the 6'8.5" you're giving him. My guess is he's somewhere between 6'6" and 6'7".

Sting & Rick Rude are both ~6'2". In the first pic Rude is probably standing on his toes. I'm not seeing a 6'7.5" man in those pics, even if Haystacks is standing further behind.
6'7.5" looks too high for Haystacks. He certainly doesn't look it here next to Dynamite Kid, who was ~5'9".

He looked about 6ft6 range in that match w/h Big Daddy.
I wouldn't have even guessed him this big let alone that pathetic 6ft11
what Match?they had about 30 over the years and were Tage Partners in the mid 1970s.and there is a Back to back photo from about 1977 on here and it's clear he's at least 6-7'' taller than Daddy at that time,so he was no less than the height on this page.if not 1'' taller.

Yes seen the clip thanks it was the only one I could find.
Hmmn...Also noted the commentator, that was a surprise.
Dave Lee Travis he was 6'3''ish Capes only compeated 3 times 79.81.and 1983,he's in the others as commmentator ,that is were he's saying Taylor was very tall.
Big Show's boots were about 1.5'' but I have just looked again at that Big Show Stax and I just noticed that as they move away from the eye to eye the camara is not in the middle as it first looks the camara is allready behind Show's back as it moves,so he's neara the Camara, not saying he's would gain more than an inch from it but he would gain some, and to get Stax peak height you need photos from 1967-1977,after 1979 he just got bigger and bigger so would lose lot of height over the day,
Paul said on 17/Nov/14
I think Big Show used to wear significantly heeled boots in the WCW days. I agree Big Show was 7'0.5 to 7'1 at the time although mo more than 6'11 today. I think also GH lost hight over the years due to pressure on the back from such high bodyweight. I recalled Rob speculating on the same phenomenon concerning Leon White.
Danimal said on 17/Nov/14
Whatever he was in the mid/late 90's, Big Show completely towered over him at that stage. Then again, Big Show was at least 7'0.5" at that time.
Paul said on 16/Nov/14
Rob, how about pages for Shirley Crabtree and Mal Kirk. Crabtree seems slightly taller than Mal Kirk who was from Pontefract and used to be employed as a nightclub bouncer in the 80's as did Haystacks in the 70's.

Well I didn't know that about Taylor, Thanks for the info.
Taylor weighed around 25 stone at times. Sadly passed away I believe in 2012.
Still sticking with me estimates though.
If you go on youtube and type in Dinnie Stones,Britans Strongest man 1982,you will find a clip of it ,he was 320lbs 23st in it but like you say 25st at times

I think Quinn was 6'4'5'' and 6'5.5'' in shoes,he was about the same height as Hogan when they taged in Canada were he was billed as 6'6''.but Alan Taylor was 6'5'' he was in the 1982 Britains Strongest Man,were Geoff Capes says about him "he's very tall the same height as me" that was the first year the BBC took over the programe from ITV

Seen that link. Not the most authoritative. I find it hard to believe that dude had only 2in on BD at 6'2 in their 1979 bout. It is on the internet for all to see.
Paul said on 29/Oct/14
An internet page has him at 1.96m. I have heard Kent Walton mention both 6'5 and 6'5.5. GH looked around 9cm taller in 1980's bouts.

Chaz said on 27/Oct/14
I don't think Quinn was 197cm he was more 194-5cm same as Pat Roach and Haystacks was a good 3'' taller than both of them, but for sure in 1977 when he was only 31st he towers over Nagasaki and I have see Kendo at least 20 times over the years and he was at least 6'1.5''-6'2''
Paul said on 22/Oct/14
As Daddy was 6'2 as per Chaz's second link below it is a rather strange supposed difference of only 5.5in - he is not particularly close to Haystacks eye line. He was about 6'9 at tallest much later 6'7'75 possibly 6'8 by 1995-6 WCW.
Chaz said on 10/Oct/14

Originally a good 7' on Crabtree who was 187-188cm.
Others: Nagasaki 187cm,Tony St Clair 191cm,Dave Taylor 191cm ,Seve Regal 190cm, Wanz(187-188cm),and Ray Steele similar to Wanz.

This is Haystacks at he's peak height about 1977ish he's about 6.5-7'' taller than Daddy, who was about the same height as Nagasaki,Tony St Clair,Dave Taylor,Seve Regal, Oto Wanz, and Ray Steele.
Paul said on 29/Sep/14
As regards GH, 6'7.5 relates to final height. Other wrestlers generally have the best insight into these matters in shoot interviews. Mick McManus said 6'9 for GH which was correct in the 1970'/80's. All that bodyweight puts pressure on the back over an extended time period. At least 3.5in on John Quinn and Anaconda aka Alan Taylor years ago. Sometimes with Rob you only get last or current height such as Undertaker and sometimes peak and current e.g Hogan.
Mark said on 27/Sep/14
There was a News of the World supplement magazine which had a piece on height gulf between partners. Martin R was on this and he was stated as 6'7. Owing to the content this height must be pretty darn accurate as if anything would have inflated to make more of a story. I'm sure if anyone wanted to corroborate what I've said the magazine could be researched.
TNTinFL said on 23/Sep/14
Rule of thumb when it comes to pro wrestlers is the 2 inch rule. Usually, the almost always inflate their height by two inches.
The Rock claimed height: 6'5". Real height: 6'3"
Triple H claimed height: 6'4". Real height: 6'2"
Undertaker claimed height: 6'10". Real height: 6'8-ish"
A lot of the smaller wrestlers use the same 2 inch 'pump'.

the 1982 edition of guinness book of records has haystacks listed at an "unconfirmed" weight of 40 stone or 560lb
Chaz said on 23/Sep/14
about time he was on here,he was billed from 31st-46st but was weighd in 1988 at 46st 8lbs that is 652lbs,but clamed to be 700lbs at one time,I don't think that is true because he was out of wrestling from 1989 for 18months with knee problems, and had to lose weight I don't think he was has massive after 1988,even in the WCW days I think he was about 580-600lbs then
Arch Stanton said on 23/Sep/14
Excellent addition, could certainly look 500 pounds range. I guessed him at 6 ft 8 once I think, I knew 6'11" wasn't right!

his weight listings are all over the place, from almost 500 up to almost 700 :)
